accessing XP thru 2000

My XP harddrive has CRC errors in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and will not boot.

Can I put the HDD on my 2000 computer and access my files that way?

All I want is to get my pictures and all that kinda stuff. I dont care if I have to eventually wipe the drive after I get my personal stuff

Possibly, XP uses a later version of NTFS, but as your only reading the drive, i would expect it to work. If it were me, i'd try it.

All depends - when you set your user account up did your tell XP to make that folder private? If you did you've got to remove the imposed access rights by right clicking on the folder and selecting security and changed access rights for everyone to full control. If you don't or can't do this then there is no hope of taking ownership of said folder. NTFS security and all.

k, here it is...

I took the drive out of the XP machine and put it in the 2000 machine as prim slave.

I am now able to view,write,execute my files on the XP drive, except for the files that I encrypted with EFS 56bit. I claimed ownership just like all the other files in the folder, and, since I am logged in as an Administrator, I thought I should be able to become the Recovery Agent.

In MMC I see myself as Recovery Agent for decrypting files, but my certificate is not TRUSTED.

How do I make my certificate trusted so I can decrypt the files??
I am not on a Domain. It is a standalone computer, so the Administrator is Local...

Sadly, you can't (that I know of). If your could windows wouldn't be a secure operating system now would it! If you've encypted the files then only your version of XP had the key to de-crypt them.

so if I build another XP machine I can get a new certificate and decrypt the files?

Or become a REcovery Agent that can do it?
