MSN Messenger Crashing

Hi guys,

I'm having problems logging in to MSN Messenger using one of my passport accounts under Windows XP Home edition. When I try to log into the account, I get an error displayed which wants to send details off to Microsoft. However, if I use a different account, I can log in to MSN Messenger with no problems. The difference between the two accounts is that the one that crashes has 148 people on the contacts, and the one that doesn't has less than 10 people on it.

The account that crashes MSN Messenger works with no problems using Windows Messenger on the same machine.

I can use MSN Messnger and the account on my XP machine at work, and also under Windows 2000.

The setup I have on the machine where the crash occurs is:
Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 SP1
MSN Messenger 6.1.0211
AMD64 3200+
512MB PC3200 RAM
120 GB Hard Disk
ATi Radeon 9800 SE 128MB
Soundblaster Audigy

Any ideas as to what could be screwing up?

Eboron

if you have been storing logs of messages it may be just overloaded with stored ims. also it could be someone sent something to that name and is stored in the recieved files for it. i have been known to use booter programs in the past and have seen some for msn that crash the account. it just dupms a file into messenger and causes it to crash when it reads it. a good house cleaning may fix you up. it is very hard to clean a msn messenger out completely, but if you delete all it settings, user accounts, stored info and reinstall it will probably be back to normal if the first suggestion doesnt work.

I'm currently logged into the account on a different machine, and it works fine here. On my AMD64 machine, MSN Messenger crashed the very first time I used it with the account, and reinstalling it after cleaning the registry hasn't solved the problem. There were no recieved files on the machine, and I've not been able to receive any messages for them to be stored. Guess I'll have to format and reinstall windows if I want MSN Messenger with that account, though I'm thinking I'll just use two accounts from now on as it does still work with my second account.

if messenger is the only problem i wouldnt format to fix it. is windows messenger running in the background? if so bring it up, click tools then options, then prefferences. take the check out of allow this program to run in the background. which version of msn messenger do you have, the latest is 6.1, but it has a update. i just did a clean install of xp on a system and installed 6.1 and it wouldnt log in, i removed it and installed 5.0 from a msn 8 cd, it worked, i allowed it to update and it works fine on 6.1 now.
