Icons delayed on start up

I don't have a clue why but after changing to Norton 2004 from 2003 (this may be totally unrelated) my desktop icons are delayed in their appearance when I log on :-

30 seconds after logging on the welcome screen appears
30 seconds later my wallpaper appears minus my icons
1min 20 seconds later the icons appear
17 seconds later Norton appears on my system tray

If some strange but vital virus scan is going on I will learn to live with the delay - but I have turned off the firewall and the virus checker - still get the delay

Any ideas anyone

have you tried look in you MSCONFIG in the start-up tab """"Warning"""" please be carefull and make sure you know what you stopping from starting.

Yes I have cut out as many start up items as I dare but to no avail something is bogging the system down somewhere but it's not obvious what it is. It took me a couple of days to find out that a driver which wasn't loading was a remnant of a previous firewall (the programmers even made the drivers hidden just to make life more fun )

I tried running Bootvis - but it didn't give me any clues - it might someone with more experience - but I couldnt spot the hold up.

Anymore ideas anyone please

Den125, try running MsConfig and disable all at start-up. see if that works.
