Exclamation Installations Take Forever!!!

hello!! i have a problem. when i install for example warcraft III, the install runs very smoothly and blazes right through!!

but when i install something else, for example..some X-box gameshark cheats from a gameshark cd. it take forever!!!

and its not just the gameshark install that takes forever! there are other apllications that take a long time. i cant think of them right this minute though.

128mb 5200 nVidia Ge-Force FX
1.80 AMD Anthlon Xp(2200+)

if all the slow installs come from cd disk(even though some are fast) could be the disk were burned in 2x,4x even 8x, they will seem slow if you install a cd that was burned in 16x,24x,32x,42x......

nice point

ridddle me this, i have installed these programs before, but then i got attacked by a virus, recovered my computer, then install them again and then i noticed something about my system .

SLOW installs. i dont know if its a disk and i dont kno if you are correct or not.

i mean these installs take AGES!!

for another example: windows update

i dont do windows update because they take like 5 maybe 6 hours just to install, this is the thing im talking about.

thanks again

ok after reading your last post it makes more sense, you have file system corruption. we could chase our tails for weeks trying to weed out all the problems, or you can format and reinstall, make sure to save your emails, ie favorites and files. if you dont want to format atleast consider a repair install. you will still have to reinstall sp1 and other windows updates again, so a fresh start would actually be about as easy, unless you dont have your drivers backed up, or cds with them.

riddle me this

ok maybe i'll try formatting

but all i have are windows xp recovery disks, and not a regular "windows xp install disk"

gosh i hate the recovery cd's, oh well. i'll try what you'v told me. but if you could tell me what a "file system corruption" is, i would kiss you!!(not really, lol)

a format and recovery disk is actually a good thing for most users, it replaces everything back like the day you bought the computer new, you dont have to worry about drivers and other conflicts. as for file corruption, if you install a program and it changes a .dll file for a newer version, your operating system may not run well, or at all with the new one, or virus can cause damage to files you have or to the partition information causing strange problems of all sorts. thats why i say we would be chasing our tails trying to fix the problem(s) because so much can and probably is going to be a problem, fix one thing, something else dies.
one thing i miss about 98, you could drop in a 98 cd, reinstall(without a format) and it would run great again, and you didnt have to reinstall all the updates, programs, or anything, it was just fixed.

oh, kewl!

ok and umm what about norton utilitys?

me and my friend worked on his computer and he was missing some files, but when we used norton utility's "win doctor" it told us exactly what files were missing, and they were .DLL files

so we went to dll-downloads.com and fixed his computer

so would norton utility's work? would it tell me the problem i have?

thanks again dude!!

dont use speed disk, or install go back, the norton unerase wizard(protected trash bin) on xp it will cause damage to the file system. you can use the windoctor and clean sweep utilities though. windoctor is a regcleaner and finds broken shortcuts, it will not fix most problems. it helps performance a bit.

oh i see!

well, i really dont want to have to reformat AGAIN! because it just takes to damn long ya know?

plus i gotta waste cd's to back everything up.

but if theres any kind of program that youy know that could help fix these problems, please do tell me. if not..i guess we'll have
to go with your formatting plan and do us up a brand new system!! lol

danke !!(thankyou in german)

have you got another computer you can add your drive to to copy the files from your drive with? and did you password protect the account? if you did you will have to take ownership of the files to get them off the drive.

no i dont have that. all i have is this comp.

i mean, i do have another computer, but its a windows 98 and runs on 56 MB of RAm with a 10 GB hard drive, and if i put my files or drive or whatever into that one, i would crash lol.

i think i might use windocter to see if it catshed the problem, if it doesnt i might just go ahead and recover my computer to make it new again.
