Unhappy Internet connection problem

My internet connection is a very stable 56k connection but I have started playing Counter Strike online and as soon as I try to get into a game the connection hangs. It thinks that it is still online but I can't even load a webpage or ping a server. I have been told that it might be a cotrrupt winsock file but I don't know how to fix this.

Any Help would be much appreciated

Maybe so much information is being passed that the connection appears to hang but in fact hasn't.
A similar thing happens when using a download manager and trying to load a page that is graphically intensive. i.e. nothing appears to be happening for ages.
I cannot see a modem having the required throughput. Particularly if the game has many players.

I have left it for a while but the internet connection doesn't come back as you would expect if it was a data overload.
I think that I'm going to have to re-install windows

Before doing that it is suggested that the winsock proxy settings may be wrong.
You could allways type "sfc.exe /scannow" from the run dialog to see if there are any corrupted files.
