VB6 backup takes 4 minutes over network to win2kserver

Hello,

I have a user on our network that runs an executable Visual Basic 6 program once a day to back up our database. The file is 86 MB. When the backup starts it usually only takes 45 seconds to finish. Well now it is taking 4 minutes.

This user used to run the backup on the same computer with ME. The backup always took 30-45 seconds until just before I upgraded him to XP. Then it started taking 3 minutes.
After I upgraded him to XP the backup was running fine at 45 seconds.

Now it is back up to 4 minutes.

I also have other users that say that it takes forever to copy any files to the Win2kserver. They are also using XP. When copying a file from the server to the desktop the speed is fine.

Is there some known issue between XP and Win2kserver?

Thanks in advance,

Eli

There has been known issues in the past. Have you got all the latest patches and Service Packs??

If not run windows update on all machines and see what happens.

There are no speed issues as far as I know. We run WinXP, 98, and 2000 on our network with 2000 servers and never have any problems.

You said that the issue started BEFORE you upgraded the user to XP, when he was still running ME. That seems to indicate to me that the problem is on the server, not the client. Have you checked to see that your server has enough free disk space? Is there a lot of disk activity when the users experience the problem? What about MEM and CPU usage during the slow-down?

We have enough free disk space

When the backup is run there usually no one else even on the network.

I will have him check the CPU usage when he runs it.

Thanks, Eli

download the WinXP SP2 and test in on one system, they have fix many of network related issue and I wouldn't surprised if intermittent connectivity would be one of them.
