Backup utility

Hi

I tried using the backup uitility to backup my documents and some other folders to CD. I can go through the wizard and create a backup file (size 3.5 GB). When I select the backup destination I run in to a porblem. I can create the backup on my harddrive. If I select the CD bruner as the destination, it gives me an error message (path not correct or you do not have access). I guess this is because the file is too big for one CD. I would like to have the file copied over multiple CDs. But I am not provided the option to chose the CD burner at all. Thanks for your suggestions.

Arnie

I wanted to add the following. Since posting above, I tried to backup a small number of files (23 MB). Again the same problem. I could not chose the CD burner as the destination. So I saved the backup on C: drive. This time I had no problem in buring a CD from this file. I am lost!!

if you are using the xp backup that comes with pro(can be added to home) it can make cd backups, but they are not very good(waste of cd disk). it does ok if you save to a hard drive. it would be better to get a copy of either norton ghost, or power quest drive image. they make bootable restore disk that you can actually use. there are many other good programs you could use, but those i know are good.

backup utility contd.

Thanks for your response. I am using the backup utility which came bundled with XP home edition. It is good to know that the problem is iwth the application and not with my system. I will look in to getting one of the third party apps. So much for windows accessories.

We use Norton Ghost 2003 at work and we have never had a problem with it. We have also Used Drive Image but we have had a cuple of corrupt images.

So I would go with Norton

...the ghost i've seen does not work w/Xp as far as copying the drive(Xp is not supported).
i have tried drive image 7.01. it requires you copy to a (same size or) larger drive (which means you probably wont be able to put it back on the original).
di 4.x would resize the partitions 7.x wont.but it doesnt matter because it doesnt work anyway (insofar as making an "exact copy" of the drive)...may work w/images and restoring an image but it doesnt make an exact copy (that you can just plug up an run off of and leave the original drive intact).....its a ($70) rip-off... ....s

Good morning

I have a related question on the issue of backup. I started using Stroage Sync which seems to work ok, except I need to identify the folders and files I want to backup (of course). Most of the files are in My documents but many of the applications like to store their data files in weird locations ie, their own program folders and they are more difficult to locate and identify. For example, I would like to back up my turbo tax or pinnacel data files. But I am not sure which file suffixes are actually the data files. If the computer crashed which has been known to happen, I would like to think that I could reload the application and recover the data from the backup external drive.

Thanks for your suggestions/comments and what is the best way to locate, identify and save variety of data files.
