rename file type

Can anyone tell me how to change the file type of any file?

First make sure Show File Extensions is on, then right click on the file, rename the .exe or whatever, and the filetype will change.

EDIT: Sorry that wasn't very clear, its Open My Computer, Tools --> Folder Options --> View--> Untick "Hide file extensions for known file types" Sorry bout that.
