Troubleshooting No Sound Problems with Sound Card

If you‘ve installed a new PCI sound card, make sure that you‘ve configured your PC to send sound to your new card rather than the old, on-board card. To do this, right-click on the Speaker icon in the taskbar and select Adjust Audio Properties. Under the Audio tab, make sure that your default device for sound playback is your new sound card. Make sure you check the Use only Default Devices box. If you don’t see your new card in the list for Sound Playback, it might not have been properly installed. You can check this in the Device Manager. To get to it, go to the Control Panel and open the System dialog. Under the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager button. In the Device Manager, look  under “Sound, Video and game controllers”. If your card isn’t listed here, you will need to manually install it using the Add Hardware utility in the Control Panel. If the utility fails to detect your soundcard, you might need to open up your cabinet and make sure that (a) Both, the card and the PCI slot are clean, and (b) the card is connected firmly.

If your card does show up in the Device Manager, but has a big, yellow Exclamation Mark next to it, it means that the sound card’s drivers weren’t properly installed. Make sure you get the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s Web site and install them.

Tip
If you’re going to use an external sound card, disable the on-board card through the BIOS. Press the [Delete] button as soon as your system boots up to enter the  BIOS. Go to the Integrated Peripherals section and change the setting for the on-board audio card to Disabled.
