External FireWire DVD-RW drive is not detected

Cause: This is a bug in Windows XP.

Solution: Microsoft suggests you install at least Service Pack 1. This will solve, in most cases, problems faced while hot-plugging FireWire devices such as DV Cams, DVD-RW drives, etc. The other possible solution is to open the Device Manager and if you see an exclamation mark beside the FireWire controller, uninstall the controller and restart the computer.
