1: Start > Right Click on My Computer and select properties. 2: Click on the "Advanced" tab 3: See the "Perfomance" section? Click "Settings" 4: Disable all or some of the following:
Fade or slide menus into view Fade or slide ToolTips into view Fade out menu items after clicking Show Shadows under menus Slide open combo boxes Slide taskbar buttons Use a background image for each folder type Use common tasks in folders
There, now Windows will still look nice and perform faster.

Great think - but for non-IT lama's (check "lama" meaning on Czech pages). EVERYBODY has to look out what standard options offers.

Common Tasks in Folders is a feature, the fade and slide are just obnoxious animations. Shadows you can keep or leave. I suggest running TweakUI and disabling all fade, slide, & animate options. Also the transparent selection rectangle, smooth scrolling, and show window contents while dragging can be turned off without confusing anyone.
Right Click on the desktop, Click Properties
Click on the |Appearance| tab
Click [Effects]
Uncheck [ ] Use the following transition effect for menus and tooltips
Uncheck [ ] Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts
Uncheck [ ] Show window contents while dragging
Click [OK]
Click [OK]
