Simply right click on the desktop and choose properties to get to the display properties. Choose the Desktop tab and click the Customize Desktop button. From there you can un-click the "Run Desktop Cleaner every 60 days" button.

bloody useless wizard was driving me nuts-on 3xp machines. Who knew they buried it in the customize desktop? Thanks, other sites tell you to modify the registry, this is easier & less harmful.

The tip was great - pity I had to be hit with a TribalFusion popup when I clicked the radio button, it's annoying popups I'm trying to get rid of here! Don't these idiots realise that a popup that's in your way is going to get cleared (unread) faster than you can blink an eye?

Thanks for the tip, this is absolutely the dumbest fucking feature in Windows I have ever seen - and one of the most persistent. To have the operating system constantly braying "You have unused icons on your desktop" is one of the most frustrating aspects of XP. And for something so pitifully irrelevant. I half-expected Microsoft to drive to my house at 3 AM breathlessly banging on my door: "Mr. Johnson! MR. JOHNSON! Do you know you have unused icons on your computer desktop? Well, did you??!"
Here's a big thanks to this site, and a big FU to the programmers at Microsoft who decided that users should be tormented with this kiddie crap.
