This is not for everyone but I have noticed when I select lots of folders and you get a blue highlighter it can start to slow down.

To fix this:
right click my compter then advanced then performance settings untick show translucent rectangle then re-tick show translucent rectangle then apply Now when you highlight your folders in Windows XP there should be no more lag.
